Jan-Michael DeRuyter: Home

Jan-Michael DeRuyter has always had a passion for music. It’s the genre through which his creativity flows. While possessing the ability to sing and play instruments such as the guitar and the saxophone, his desire since 1994 has been to play the Native American flute. He first played this beautiful, ancient instrument while doing wildlife habitat enhancement work in the old growth Rain Forests of Oregon.

The beauty of playing this type of flute is not only the spiritual connection that is achieved, but the improvisation that occurs throughout each composition. This freedom allows the listener to be carried off by the simplicity of the instrument. There are different styles used when playing the Native American flute. Jan-Michael’s is a form of prayer, to heal and uplift the spirit. When played from the heart and soul, this music is “felt” rather than “heard”.

Over the years, his flute music has taken him on many creative paths. His first project was a self-produced CD titled, “Prayers From Within”. He is the featured artist on “Meditations: Native American Flute”, a CD which is distributed through Target Stores. Jan-Michael's music has also been used on meditational tapes, in a public service announcement for the Burn Institute of San Diego, and in the soundtrack for the feature length movie “Turquoise”. He has performed live through the ARTS in Healthcare programs in hospitals, on stage as a soloist and with other musicians, in assisted living residences and Alzheimer’s facilities, and in elementary and middle school programs.
